The Great Gatsby Essay The Great Gatsby is a famous book written by one of the more well known American authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald. When it was first released, it met with some difficulty from publishers because it didn’t fall into one specific category that they could use to define it. The book is essentially about how a man named Nick moves to East Egg. He meets new people and gets exposed to the life of the rich, and this life causes problems for his friends. Gatsby, who is one of Nick’s closest friends, gets killed after his car is connected with a car hitting a pedestrian. Nick is the only one to attends this rich man funeral, and he realizes that Gatsby isn’t quite the man he knew him to be. After Tom told her to stop and she did not, he broke her nose in a fury. Everything in the first couple of chapters represents the corruption of man via vice. Tom Buchanan represents lust and deceit. The Valley of Ashes represents the decay of moral integrity. This will tie in to the demise of a character, and show the reader that riches, rage, and lust lead to physical ruin. In Chapter 3, we meet Jay Gatsby, a rich man who collected his riches from old money. Gatsby often hosts extravagant parties in his replication of a French castle, and people from all over the city attend, though Gatsby know almost none of them, and the seldom of the guests know Gatsby. The amount of food put out at his party for people who are practically strangers is astounding. It even teters on the edge of hedonism, Gatsby himself doesn’t show at the party, he’s just doing this to flaunt his riches. Later, we find that Daisy and Gatsby were lovers at one point. They are both excited at the prospect of seeing one another, and they end up striking some sort of a soft romance. This infuriates Tom, and he rushes over to malevolently bark at Gatsby. During this period, Mr. Wilson (the husband of Myrtle) finds out that she has been unfaithful to him, and decides to have her get help. In hearing this, Tom flies into a rage, considering that the
